Image Examination Related Questions
Q:What is the difference between MRI and PET?
A:
Magnetic resonance imaging MRI is mainly for the diagnosis of various tumors and soft tissue diseases. It indicates a valid diagnostic value for solid organs such as the brain nervous system, musculoskeletal system, spinal cartilage, thyroid, liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidney, pancreas, adrenal gland, reproductive organs (bladder, uterus, ovaries, vas deferens, prostate gland) and breast. Another advantage of MRI is that it is non-radioactive. It is suitable for head and neck tumors, nasopharyngeal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, etc.
Positron imaging provides a whole-body scan for the detection of malignant tumors and metastases. Positron tomography contains radiation.
Q:What is the difference between mammography and breast ultrasound?
A:
Mammography is a flat image, and for dense breasts, it is easy to overlap the breast and not see the subtle lesions, so it is suitable for breasts with degenerating breast tissue. Mammography is a highly sensitive diagnostic tool for identifying microcalcifications in situ in breast cancer. In addition, asymmetry or distortion of the breast structure is also an important sign that can help in the early detection of breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer through mammography screening, especially in postmenopausal women, can detect some early breast cancer lesions that cannot be detected by palpation.
Breast ultrasound does not contain radiation, and it is easier to detect tumors than mammography for the dense breasts of young Asian women and has higher sensitivity for fibrocystic and fibroids. However, for small lumps or early-stage breast cancer with tiny calcifications, breast ultrasound is less likely to detect them. For women under the age of 40, because the breast gland is developed and dense, mammography will not be as precise. It is recommended to do a breast ultrasound every year and then follow up with mammography if needed; while women over the age of 45 are recommended to do mammography every two years, and if the breast gland is denser, breast ultrasound can be added as a supplement to increase the integrity and accuracy of the examination.
Q:What is the difference between computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
A:
Computed tomography contains radiation. It uses X-ray fluoroscopy to create a tomographic image, which can display a cross-sectional image of the internal organs of the body, and has the advantages of rapid imaging and being unaffected by air. MRI contains no radiation. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves in human tissues to generate signals to form images, and a wealth of image information can be obtained.
Q:Will the contrast injection make me feel uncomfortable?
A:
Most people will experience feeling warm during CT contrast injection, but it will subside quickly and can be relieved by taking deep breaths, while a few people may experience nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and chills. When contrast injection is administered for an MRI,only a very small number of patients will have adverse reactions such as nausea and vomiting.
